The nation’s largest celebration of outdoors recreation is even bigger this year. The 15th annual Texas Parks and Wildlife Expo next weekend in Austin is expected to attract up to 45,000 people, about 9,000 more than last year and more than six times the crowd of 7,000 for the first Expo in 1992, said Tom Harvey, a Texas Parks and Wildlife Department spokesman. Attendance, however, isn’t the only thing that has grown at the free Expo. Several new events have been added, providing almost any outdoors activity a person might want. The Expo originated as an event to celebrate the role hunters play in conservation but over the years has added other shooting sports, fishing, kayaking, mountain biking, rock climbing, camping and hiking. Chuck Nash, then the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission chairman, “believed we should do something to promote hunting and wildlife conservation,” Harvey said. “The Expo started out …

Suspect killed in crash after police chase A man being pursued by police after an alleged armed robbery attempt was involved in a five-vehicle crash in Coatesville that killed him and injured eight others, police said. Police said Bradley Roach, 20, of West Bradford, tried to rob the Caln Farmer’s Market Gun Shop at 9 p.m. Saturday and assaulted the owner before fleeing in a car. “As far as we know, nothing was actually taken,” Caln Township Police Officer David Wardle said. The owner was struck by the butt end of a shotgun and went to a hospital to be treated for facial fractures, police said. The fleeing car then entered Coatesville and clipped a car that had four people inside, sending it spinning, and then hit a second vehicle head-on, police said. Roach died of injuries at Reading Hospital. Some of the others injured were flown to hospitals for …

Man kills children and himself in Amish school

Saturday, March 17th, 2007

The first thing Charles Carl Roberts IV did when he walked into the one-room Amish schoolhouse, police said, was to show the children his semiautomatic pistol. He was talking, but he didn’t make sense. “Have you seen anything like this?” police say he asked. “Can you help me find it?” Roberts let all 15 boys leave. A pregnant woman, too. Three adults were allowed to escape with their infant children. He bound the girls with wire and plastic ties and lined them up at the blackboard. He called his wife to say that he wouldn’t be coming home, that he loved her. And then he began to shoot the girls. A scene of carnage erupted in pastoral Lancaster County about 11 a.m. yesterday as a lone gunman with a 20-year-old grievance took his revenge on a room full of pupils at the West Nickel Mines Amish School, then turned the …

Profiting off public safety.(Opinion)

Saturday, March 17th, 2007

Byline: Mike Dano It looks like everybody and their mother is courting the public-safety market. Thanks to the wonders of digital TV, there’s now a bunch of extra spectrum at 700 MHz, a valuable band due to its propagation characteristics. Congress agreed to give 24 megahertz of this newly freed 700 MHz spectrum to public safety, and then auction off the rest. Of course, industry is hungry to bid on the 700 MHz that is being auctioned. However, it appears that won’t be enough-industry now looks increasingly hungry for the 700 MHz of spectrum designated for public …

Stern heard on ‘YSP

Saturday, March 17th, 2007

94.1 WYSP listeners heard a familiar voice Tuesday afternoon when Howard Stern called into Kidd Chris’s show. He spent about 30 minutes on the air plugging Sirius Satellite Radio, which yesterday began a two-day free trial on sirius.com. Pittsburgh’s 93.7 K-ROCK, a CBS Radio station that syndicates Chris’ show, mysteriously developed technical difficulties just as Stern came on the air. While Pittsburgh listeners did not hear Stern’s appearance, WYSP was not so petty and let Stern be heard on its airwaves. Stern ,of course, famously left CBS Radio, then Infinity Broadcasting, for the world of satellite. He was later sued by CBS, and it was settled out of court.
