Airsoft Vs Paintball: Which One Is Better

Monday, February 18th, 2008

Are you an airsofter or paintballer? That is the question that many enthusiasts in the sport want to know. But for a beginner who is not sure where to start, it can be difficult to determine the difference between the two. So, for all of you newbees to the sport of simulated combat, here is the rundown.

Paintball is a sport which is often played outdoors. This exciting extreme sport is very popular all over the United States and is played all over the world.

The usual game of choice in paintball is capture the flag. Each of the teams wears an arm band and tries to capture the flag from the other teams base.

The object of the game is to capture the other teams flag and bring it back to you home base without getting hit by a paintball. Once you are hit, you are out of the game.

The weapon of choice for this game is the Paintball gun, or marker. These guns usually have a barrell, trigger, and a reservoir to hold extra paintballs.

Airsoft, on the other hand, does not use paint pellets at all. Instead their choice of pellet is the BB pellet. This entreme sport, which was developed in the 1980s in Japan, can be referred to as a more extreme version of paintball.

The weapon of choice for this sport, is the Airsoft BB guns. These guns are unique because of their realistic appearance. In fact you can get almost any kind of airsoft gun from a simple airsoft pistol to a Desert Eagle Beretta, or eve an Oozie machine gun.

Airsofter enjoy a more war-like atmosphere. Arenas in airsoft are played in buildings, allotted indoor airsoft battlefields and outdoors. You will often see an airsofter in bdus and more tactical military gear. This makes for an extremely exciting realistic gaming experience.

Games that are played usually include Capture the Flag, Team Deathmatch, Close Quarters Battle and Military Simulation.

So, which one is better? Honestly, both games have their pros and cons.

On the up side with paintball, it is far easier to to tell who has been hit. People who have bee hit are clearly identified by the paint left on their suit. Also, it is far easier to find a paintball arena in the United states than an airsoft facility. This is primarily due to the overall popularity of paintball.

On the down side, paintball games tend to cost a bit more than airsoft games in many areas. The BBs for paintball can be more expensive as well. Also, some people argue that the battle simulation in paintball is not as realistic as in airsoft, but this is mostly speculation.

On the other hand, airsoft battles are boasted to be more realistic. The weapons overall have a more realistic look and feel. People also seem to dress up more for the battle. In fact, it is almost an unwritten rule that a person should dress for battle in an airsoft game. Plus most materials for airsoft can be relatively affordable in comparison to paintball.

On the downside, space for airsoft facilities are far more limited in comparison to paintball facilities. Also, the age range for many airsoft arenas is 18 and over in comparison to paintball arenas that cater to younger ages overall.

Innovations In Police Officer Flashlights

Monday, February 18th, 2008

Today’s law enforcement agencies can take advantage of the newest technological advances in many different ways. Not only can those who fight crime have access to devices that seem to come right out of James Bond spy movies, they can use equipment similar to what’s used on television’s CSI drama series.

Manufacturers of the latest in police gear have announced some surprising inventions that are now available, but perhaps still a little difficult to get. However, within a year these devices should be easily accessible, and within a few they may even be “standard issue” for many police departments.

Many seasoned police veterans may wonder what could possibly be new with regards to flashlights to make their job easier. Well, heavy duty flashlights and tactical flashlights used by police can now do more than shed light on a scene or a perpetrator.

Since LED police flashlights are the tool of choice in many areas, some companies have simply focused on making them even more dependable and sturdy than they already are. They’ve been dropping the flashlights from 30 feet to test durability, submerging them to check for an ability to stay waterproof, and timing not only the shining time, but the overall life time of the batteries. There are now dozens of suppliers of police flashlights that provide specific product specifications, including the wattage, lumens, scope of light, and hazardous condition defense.

As with any product, however, the best thing to do is to determine local and user needs and compare what’s available to what the budget may allow. Some tactical or heavy duty flashlights may cost as little at $40 each, but some can go up to $200-not including battery chargers, holsters, clips for attaching to clothes or duty belts, or built-in extras.

The most important aspects of police flashlights would be ease of use and dependability, since they must continuously function under high-risk conditions. Certain LED models claim hundreds of hours of light use, convenient on/off buttons, and an almost indefinite life span.

Even though all offer consistent light without dimming, LED flashlights can vary by size and weight. Some officers may prefer the lighter ones, while others may prefer the heavier, as they then can be used as a weapon. One department may wish to use only the high-intensity white LED light bulbs, while another city’s force may wish to utilize the advantages of colored LED bulbs for night vision, checking blood trails, or signaling.

It’s clear that different police departments, and even different officers within the same city, could face a range of dangerous situations. These call for specialty police flashlights. Almost every officer would be able to utilize a flashlight that can cut through smoke and offer adjustable beams of light, but there may not be as frequent a need for the more upgraded features on a regular basis.

There is a model that contains a pepper-spray canister, a flashlight that can detect metal (vibrating and flashing a red light when encountering metal), one that creates glow-in-the-dark patterns, and even styles which provide beacon or strobe-light effects. Plus, to further enhance weaponry, police flashlights are now providing laser-aiming devices, gun mounting capabilities, and shotguns hidden within the flashlights’ bodies.

Tactical Knives: From September 11 To Anyone’s Pocket

Monday, February 11th, 2008

Who hasn’t read the account of the September 11th New York and Washington DC terrorist attack, where terrorists were thought to have used “box cutters” in order to get by airport security and launch their mission. Instead, it turns out that the likely weapon used emerged from the new field of tactical knives.

No longer relegated to camping and fishing expeditions, short and long blade serrated edged tactical knives are turning up in many urban scenes “when a gun is not an appropriate means of self defense”.

Fear of mugging and assault from an already well armed populace, ordinary city dwellers from all walks of life are turning in droves to the latest high tech survival knife designs. Compact and easily concealed, ergonomically shaped, offering a simple one-hand flick to instantly reveal a potentially lethal blade, the new breed of pocket knives deliver lethal potentials to whomever ends up on the wrong side of the handle.

When Does A Tactical Knife Become An Outlawed Weapon Like Switchblades? Like knife designs, supporting laws are complex and define restrictions yet offer opportunities for designers to enter “loophole” areas. A ¾ ounce tactical knife requires the tiniest of “manual” movement in order to release its 1 ½ inch perforated blade. A switchblade, even while opening slower than the legal unregulated tactical knives, is narrowly defined in earlier 1950’s law as a weapon requiring a trigger-button design element. Push the button and the blade springs to open positions, hence the name switchblade.

Design And Use Origins - Tactical Pocket Knives. No mistaking that the origins of 21st century pocket tactical knives lies in the combat armaments design tradition. Key attributes? Light weight, ease of concealment, blade length with optional serrated edge or perforated finish in order to convey maximum damage.

One Hand Operation. While law enforcement officials view any knife as a crime-in-waiting, people hiking, swimming, boating, making temporary in-field repairs to gear all appreciate ease-of-use. One hand operation for opening and closing allows quick-fix jobs to be completed safely. And, yes, self defense may require that once-in-a-lifetime response need where you’re being attacked and you can only use one hand to locate and then engage your tactical knife against some bad guy.

Tactical Pocket Knives - Weight And Length. Ergonomic handle plus blade typically measure 4 inches or less while weighing in at around 6 ounces or less. Blades are offered in steel, light weight titanium, straight edge or serrated edge. There are even plastic assisted opening knives that are easy to conceal, yet offer cutting performance equal to the job of cutting meat or even light wood.

Brands And Prices. Most of the major brands produce designs in the tactical pocket knife segment, producing annual sales of over $1 billion. Entry knives in this segment can cost $20 whereas some brands are priced at $140 or more. Major manufacturers and their online or bricks-and-mortar distributors include Leatherman, Case, Cold Steel, Buck, Benchmade, Masters Of Defense and others.

Legal Issues - Virtually Unregulated. State and city laws remain uneven, so the expanding market for tactical pocket knives will continue to be de facto unregulated. Individual cities like Atlanta have a 2 inch blade legal limit, but that hasn’t prevented “legally permitted” tactical knives to become the weapon-of-choices in well publicized homicide investigations.
